Privacy Policy

Updated:September 6, 2026Effective:September 6, 2026

Welcome to KnowIt. KnowIt is a browser extension designed with a local-first approach and focused on helping you read web pages more effectively. This Privacy Policy explains how information related to your use of the product is handled, and where the boundaries lie among local storage, browser sync, and third-party services.

1. Definitions

  1. 1.1“KnowIt” means this browser extension and its installable tools, including but not limited to in-page text find, summarization, selection translation, and page export.
  2. 1.2“Local data” means information stored on your current device or in the browser’s local storage, such as settings, history, and activation status.
  3. 1.3“Third-party services” means external services you configure or choose to use, such as model providers, the Afdian payment platform, and browser account sync.

2. How I handle data

  1. 2.1Local-first: page content, selected text, in-page find history, summaries, and generated results are processed locally by default and are not uploaded to KnowIt’s own servers.
  2. 2.2API keys in browser settings: if you configure a model API key, it is stored in browser settings and may sync across devices through Chrome Sync. KnowIt does not collect, store, or forward it.
  3. 2.3Config sync: installed tools and preferences may sync across devices through the browser’s built-in sync. KnowIt does not operate a separate cloud account system.
  4. 2.4Activation info: when you purchase and activate premium features, you may need to provide an order number and bound email for authorization checks.
  5. 2.5New tab web search: if you use the search box on the new tab page, queries are submitted through the browser’s Chrome Search API and handled by your default search provider. KnowIt does not replace, modify, or record your search provider settings or query content.

3. Third-party services and data transfer

  1. 3.1When you use AI features, the content of requests you initiate is sent to the model provider you configure. Review that provider’s privacy policy and billing terms.
  2. 3.2Payment and activation may involve third-party platforms such as Afdian. Payment details are handled by those platforms.
  3. 3.3If you contact me via GitHub Issues or email, the details you voluntarily provide will be used only for communication and issue handling.

4. Your choices

  1. 4.1You may modify or clear local settings and history in the extension at any time.
  2. 4.2You may choose whether to configure third-party model services; without them, related AI features may be unavailable or limited.
  3. 4.3You may turn off or sign out of browser account sync to reduce settings syncing across devices.

5. Updates and contact

I may update this Privacy Policy as product features change. Updated terms will be shown in the product and take effect upon publication.

If you have questions about this policy, contact me through the email addresses or GitHub Issues listed in the footer.
